benjamin just forwarded me this email.

Hi,

Do you remember that nice evening in the Hong Kong Brew House?

Hadn't we a lot of fun. Say hello to your friends

Best regards from Germany

Norbert

"norbert" attached the photographs he took of us. we look like whales swimming in peanut shells, so i'm not going to post them.

but hadn't we a lot of fun.

both my sisters have left me for the mainland. the three of us in polluted metropoli (hong kong, beijing, and shanghai). i don't know whose is the dirtiest, but i think beijing wins.

yesterday we took a ferry out to lamma island to eat seafood. so i've changed my "things i can eat" criteria to "things without faces". if it has a face then i will try not to eat it. do snails have faces? i ate snails last night. the ferry ride was pretty. my mom got in a bit of a scuffle with some mainlanders because they didn't line up and pushed their way to the front. i suppose someone could have fallen off the pier and died from exposure to toxins in the hong kong harbour

mummy: "i hate people with no class. they come to hong kong and act like barbarians. their tour guide should have given an etiquette lesson!"

this building was designed by césar pelli. he designed the cdf! cool. i call this the claw building. clear skies are rare so this is a lucky picture.

i spend all day indoors in a room that is criminally air-conditioned. this is the pastiest i have ever been in the month of july.

work is taking over my life. i am afraid to open my email. all day i call people and leave messages and send emails in the hopes of having an interview so that i can book a crew because the five or six of us have to share crews.

this is jenn and she's graduating today. she's got a huge nostril-sized wart on the side of her nose. she kept telling mummy about it over the phone but mummy was like, "just get it removed in hong kong! the ontario health care system sucks!!" and so i sent mum this picture and yay! wart removal.

short cutoff shorts? so last year.

minibus stop.

i found an ugly blouse in mummy's room and am going to steal it. she hasn't worn it since 1996 (30 pounds ago). i also found these giant clipon earrings. contact me if you need your earlobes stretched and i'd be happy to lend them to you.

this is times square, a shopping mall plaza thingy. hong kong has world cup fever. these are probably the most congested escalators that i've ever seen, yet they decided to stop one of the down escalators for a promotion (SERIOUSLY THEY TURN EVERY GODDAMN THING INTO A HUGE GIMMICK. STEPHEN HAWKING WAS HERE AND THEY TURNED THAT INTO A HUGE MEDIA GIMMICK TOO AND IT MADE ME WANNA VOM) and so there was this dangerous blob of people trying to get on the one that was still in operation; i wonder what would happen if a fire happened. anyway, the blue thing is real person! she was painted. poor thing.

one more...
when i was little i loved this show called "pingu" so i went on youtube to find videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEdsZJaV23I&mode=suggested_some&search=pingu
someone took it upon himself to subtitle it for us! how considerate!! look for the gummipenis part. or just watch the whole thing through to the end!

one last thing! swiped from mockingmusic.blogspot.com
the old valley restoration society - crazy

the first day of my life

FIRST OFF, i'd better start writing the next great post post post-modern novel or else i will have to join the workforce and that commitment will be binding.

...

every morning i wake up to a cold wet snuffling thing in my face. friends, meet reilly!

faux-pas i committed today: (wait, faux-pas's?)
1. i overdressed,
2. i left the house too early and had to awkwardly kill time at the subway station, and
3. faux-pas of my life: my cantonese skills proved to be very, very missing.

so i left our flat at 8:30, and when i got out of the elevator i realized that i had no umbrella and the ground looked really wet outside so i went back up and retrieved that. then, inside the lift, i realized i had forgotten my wallet, so i got out at the seventh floor and climbed up to my flat and got that (well, it was something like climbing; i am still kind of crippled). and inside the lift (the third time) i realized that i'd locked my keys inside. OH WELL.

this is how i get to work: take mini-bus #25 down to causeway bay, take the mtr (mass transit railway = subway) from causeway bay to north point and then transfer to the purple line, take the mtr from north point to tseung kwan o, and then go to the bus terminal and take the #600-something bus to tv city. i thought it would take forever, but the whole circuit took less than forty minutes! and the #600-something bus had a few tv personalities. cool.

so i got to work and there was a huge fiasco with the personnel department. as in, i didn't exist to them. so they phoned up my boss (their boss) and got an earful and then they were bitchy to me, but i got this cool lanyard thing with a computerized card and a photo id.

i eventually groped my way to the news and info room i was shown the ropes (they use this really cool program and there's all this weird lingo, like "slugs" and other strange earth creatures), and then i was offloaded onto a lady who works for another public affairs program about money matters and i met a part-timer who was really nice. i think that i am going to be friends with her.

we went all the way back to central to film interviews at two locations. the first was with this crazy australian lady who manages a vastly underfunded chamber orchestra. she thought the program was in cantonese so she spoke cantonese the whole time and was very confused when the producer prompted her to speak in english. she had a lot of fun directing footage of herself and i thought she was crazy until she started speaking. and then i was moved and it made me want to buy tickets to all her concerts.

the next person that was interviewed was this smooth-talking stockbroker with a feng shui obsession. the sitting area of his office had this long counter that was cluttered with a mixture of religious statues (like the fat buddha and thai statues and even a boxful of holy jesus water) and trophies from golf tournaments, and pictures of himself.

the cameraman and eng dude were really funny. they didn't say much, but when they did, it was pretty biting. "you'll never forget this!" said the cameraman to us in cantonese. "what do you mean??" i asked. "you'll see. in two months' time you'll know what i'm talking about." perhaps i should have investigated further, but i was going on four hours of sleep and jet lag made me less sharp.

...

so i spent most of the day in transit. thankfully, justina lent me her ipod, and one of her playlists is entitled "reminds me of you" and it was all the music that i listened to and it made me happy and sad.

this is what the mtr looks like when it is empty:

i live [12 hours] in the future.

speaking of the future, and backwardness, only white people in hong kong are simultaneously naive and audacious enough to walk around causeway bay with no shoes on. in the rain. what a lovely concoction of rainwater, spit, phlegm, urine, dissolved poo and grime!

...

anna, what's my favourite thing to say? next to "what a stupid formality!" and "i go through this fucking charade every night!" ... the answer: "THIS ISN'T WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR!"

or maybe it is. i don't know. my job is to produce a show, and hopefully that will happen within the next two months. it needs to be 24 minutes long. and it can be about anything, as long as i can get a few case studies in, and as long as it fits into a larger theme. if you've got ideas, i am a repository for them!!

song of the day: bishop allen - coupla easy things
